Spain’s best-selling white wine is Verdejo from Rueda. The Verdejo grape has been grown in the Rueda appellation for over ten centuries.
The wines display touches of scrub-land herbs, hay and fennel that mingle with intense fruit and refreshing acidity. On the palate, they have body and structure, which is the hallmark of great white wines, and display a characteristic bitterness in the finish that balances harmoniously with the fruit.
The Rueda appellation is situated on high plains rising to 700 to 800 metres (2,300 to 2,600 feet) above sea-level.
Winters are cold and very long; springs are short with late frosts; and summers are hot and dry and only interrupted by unwelcome thunderstorms.
These extreme conditions force the roots of the vines to seek out water supplies deep in the subsoil to a greater extent than in other European vineyards.

The Rueda appellation is one of the few wine regions in Europe specialised in white wine production and in the protection and development of its indigenous grape variety: VERDEJO.
